Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain; a not so in depth book/tv comparison

Over the summer FX aired season one of the Strain, which is for the most part set to follow The Strain, the first book of The Strain Trilogy. I read in an article that del Toro wanted to the tv show originally, couldn't find a network, wrote the books to tell the story and is now getting the chance to actually do the show all the way through. See kids, dreams can come true.

Book Description

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Ephraim "Eph" Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing.

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city - a city that includes his wife and son - before it is too late.

Instead of actually doing a full book review or season review that might spoil you, I’m just gonna talk about a few things that lend better to either the show or the book. All images are promotional material from before the show aired or from the first episode. Content warning for below the cut: blood, gore and violence.

Review by Angela D. Williams
A walker is making her way through the woods, toward the sound of screaming. Suddenly a man jumps out and kills her, and another walker, with a pick axe. He runs into a woman carrying a shovel, and they know each other. There are other people not far away, fighting more walkers. They run from the walkers, and one of them is bitten, but they all keep going. They make their way out of the woods and outside a partially downed fence. They argue about what to do about the woman who was bitten, and reluctantly take her inside with them. They make their way inside and the camera pans out to reveal that it is the back entrance of the prison.

The latest episode of The Walking Dead, "When the Dead Come Knocking," pulls no punches. Immediately we're thrown into the drama with Glenn, who is taped to a chair, looking stone-faced as Merle goes on about how he didn't mean him any harm. He tells him he's an asshole just like he was back in Atlanta when they left him on the roof.

"Hounded" -- 11/18/2012

Merle and others are walking in the woods. They come across walker parts, set up as kind of symbols on the ground. One of them says it says "go back." Merle laughs and claps. "She sent us a biter-gram."

The latest episode of The Walking Dead opened with a festive cook-out/party in the middle of the day. Andrea is talking to the Scientist, and Michonne is watching her from afar, looking very unhappy.
